COOLAMON SHIRE COUNCIL SAYS NO TO DRINK DRIVING AND IS ASKING “WHAT’S YOUR PLAN B?”

Did you know? Drivers who commit a low range drink driving offence for the first time will have their licence suspended immediately, effective for three months and also receive a fine.

Drink and drug driving are two very significant behavioural factors contributing to death and serious injury on our local road network. Research shows you are 23 times more likely to crash if you are under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. It is illegal and dangerous to drive after taking illicit drugs or consuming alcohol and although the risks of drink driving are widely reported, many people are still likely to justify driving when over the legal limit if they believe:

·         Driving is the only means of getting home; and /or

·         They are only driving a short distance; and /or

·         They are going to use quiet roads; and /or

·         They need the car the next day.

“We can often underestimate the effects ‘a few drinks’ can have on our driving skills and overestimate our ability as a driver and when faced with the potential inconvenience of finding an alternative way home, some of us simply choose to drink and drive” says Coolamon Shire Councils Road Safety Officer Karen Trethowan.

During the month of December Coolamon Shire has three venues involved in the Plan B – Win A Swag campaign : Sport and Rec Club, Royal Tavern and the London Hotel, Ardlethan

The Plan B drink driving campaign aims to empower drivers to not only make the choice not to drink and drive, but to find a safe way home

Visit one of our licensed venues participating in the campaign, fill out an entry form letting us know “What’s Your Plan B” and go in the draw to win one of four Kings Big Daddy Deluxe Swag and swag cover.

Every year countless families are torn apart due to often avoidable road crashes, by working together we can reduce the deaths and serious injuries on our road network. The choices we all make behind the wheel need to be smart and safe and ultimately, there is no excuse for unsafe behaviour on the road because it can have tragic and life-changing consequence.

Remember lives lost on our road network are not just numbers, they are somebody’s family member, friend or neighbour, so let’s say no to drink/drug driving and work together to keep our road network safe.
