Road Classification / Hierarchy
Various classifications of Roads exist within the Shire.
National Highway
Newell Highway is funded by the Federal Government with maintenance being undertaken by Roads & Maritime Services (previously known as the Roads & Traffic Authority).
State Road
Burley Griffin Way is funded by the Roads & Maritime Services with maintenance being undertaken by Temora Shire Council on Coolamon Shire Council’s behalf under a Single Invitation Contract (SIC) to the Roads & Maritime Services.
Regional Roads
MR240 (Wagga to Coolamon to Ardlethan), MR243 (Junee to Marrar to Coolamon to Ganmain to Matong to Grong Grong), Mary Gilmore Way (Coolamon to Ariah Park), MR543 (Millwood Road) are funded by Block Grant from the Roads & Maritime Services with maintenance being undertaken by Coolamon Shire Council.
Local Roads
Dedicated roads owned and maintained by Coolamon Shire Council. These are split between sealed and unsealed roads. The level of maintenance performed on unsealed roads is determined by a Road Hierarchy System which has been determined by Council.
To reflect Council’s commitment to the ongoing construction and maintenance of its road network, a policy has been adopted to determine road hierarchies and match them with pre-determined levels of service to guide Council staff in developing future roadworks programs.
Council will work towards building and maintaining the road network to the appropriate levels of service as funds permit.
