Swimming Pools
Backyard swimming pools are common in Australia for recreation, however it is important that all pools comply with the relevant safety regulations and standards.
Swimming pool owners must register their pool on the NSW Government’s Swimming Pool Register. Failure to register may result in a fine.
As a pool owner, you are responsible for ensuring that safety barriers – including fencing and gates – are correctly installed, in good working order, and maintained in line with Australian Standards.
Gates and doors providing access to the pool area must remain closed at all times.
If you are unsure whether your pool meets safety requirements, you can apply for a Swimming Pool Compliance Certificate.
A Council officer will inspect your pool and advise of any issues.
Once these are resolved and a follow-up inspection is completed, a Compliance Certificate will be issued.
Pools found to be non-compliant must be upgraded to meet current safety standards.
