Winter School Holiday Program in the Coolamon Shire

Each school holidays, Coolamon Shire Council’s Community Development team delivers a program designed to engage, support and connect young people across the Shire — and this winter’s program certainly did not disappoint.

Thanks to funding secured through the Office for Youth, Council was able to deliver a fun and engaging program for young people aged between 12 and 24 years. More than 40 young people participated in activities designed to build confidence, learn new skills, support wellbeing and create opportunities for social connection within their local community.

Council partnered with businesses to deliver two activities throughout the winter school holiday period.

Street Slamin Dance Centre hosted a dance workshop, bringing together 20 young people to learn a new dance routine in a safe, supportive and fun environment. The workshop provided participants with the opportunity to build confidence, develop a new skill and, most importantly, have fun and connect with others.

Council also partnered with Foodiam to deliver a hands-on cooking class for 16 young people. Participants learned about food hygiene and safe kitchen practices before getting involved in preparing Moroccan beef skewers with tzatziki dressing and chocolate lava cake with orange syrup.

After all their hard work in the kitchen, participants sat down together to enjoy the meal they had prepared before heading to Forum 6 Cinema to watch Monsters and Minions. The group then travelled back to Coolamon by bus, rounding out a fun-filled day of learning, food and entertainment.

Coolamon Shire Council would like to sincerely thank the Office for Youth for its support and funding, which made these activities possible.

The funding has enabled local young people to access valuable experiences and opportunities that may otherwise require significant travel or expense to participate in.

Coolamon Shire Council remains committed to creating inclusive, accessible and engaging opportunities for young people across the Shire and looks forward to continuing to deliver programs that support their wellbeing, development and connection to the community
